The goal of this study is to reveal technologically applicable (cellular) modulations of attached microflora, potentially upgrading the cell capacity to degrade organic pollutants. In this context, the effect of fungal cell attachment has been investigated not only in view of the application of fungal biodegraders, but also in view of one of the bottlenecks of water biotreatments, namely an insufficient capacity of their microflora to tolerate both pollutant toxicity and stressing conditions of the environment. In addition, the effect of humic substances, consisting in their capacity to aggregate on the outer part of fungal cell wall, was found to modulate the bioavailability of hydrophobic compounds. The results obtained suggest that both cell responses enhance the applicability of fungal microflora in water treatment systems.
