Case studies are presented utilizing CAP18~(TM) and CAP18-ME~(TM) to stimulate anaerobic biodegradation of PCE at three dry cleaners in northern Indiana. At Site 1, a concentrated source area was first addressed by permanganate chemical oxidation, followed by source and plume treatment with injection of 8,864 kg of CAP18? and 8,682 kg of CAP18-ME? using a combined 123-point injection array. At Site 2, the VOC concentrations were low and the objective was to mitigate offsite migration by injecting 3,773 kg of CAP 18? in two 14-point, 21-m long biobarriers. Site 2 was amended by injecting 193 kg of CAP18-ME? in a 5-point supplemental injection. At Site 3 a PCE source area was treated with 1,545 kg of CAP 18? injected using a 22-point array, followed by 1,897 kg of CAP18-ME? injected using a 27-point array. All three sites exhibit the expected anaerobic and reducing conditions, VOC reductions, and formation of intermediates. Manganese from the permanganate injection at Site 1 did not pose a problem for establishing reducing conditions. Partitioning of VOCs into the CAP 18? may be an important factor at Site 3.
