DSP Implementation of an Average Current Mode Controlled Power Factor Correction Converter

The emergence of low cost, high performance DSP controllers with integrated power electronic peripherals have made it possible for the power supply designers to consider this technology as a suitable option for their high frequency switch mode power supply applications. However, the power supply engineers, mostly familiar with analog control designs, are faced with new challenges as they start to adopt these new digital control techniques in their designs. This paper, therefore, presents a step-by-step DSP based digital control implementation method, using a power factor correction stage as an example. Different control blocks and parameters, used in analog domain, are redefined prior to the control implementation in digital domain. The loop is then analyzed and the required voltage and current loop controllers are derived. Finally, test results from a prototype converter are presented to validate the performance of the digital controller.
