The increasing volume of household and industrial waste is a major problem and the application of recycled material in the form of compost is a means of reducing the problem. Lack of certain components and elements in the compost may, however, create difficulties in plant development. To study the effect of different rates of municipal compost, nitrogen and phosphorous on the growth and dry matter production of forage maize (cultivar S.C 704), an experiment was carried out at the Research Unit of Aboorayhan Campus of Tehran University, in 2000. The experimental design was a split factorial with basic random blocks in four replications. The treatments consisted of different quantities of compost (zero, 10 and. 20 tonnes dry matter ha~(-1)) in the main plots and different level of nitrogen (zero, 100 and 200 kg ha~(-1) N nitrogen) and phosphorous (zero, 60 and 120 kg ha~(-1) P_2O_5) in factorial sub-plots. The results of variance and differences showed that application of different levels of municipal compost together with N and P had a significant impact on the yield of dry matter of maize. The non significant increases of dry matter yield and certain other factors from the application of municipal sewage compost alone may be partly because due to the low amount of municipal sewage sludge applied and the lack of organic minerals in the soil of the experiment.
