Field studies were conducted through hydrometeorological measurements of groundwater level, etc. for the Tsukigaumi and Kamibibai bogs in central Hokkaido to assess annual water balance and the recharge contribution of snowmelt to the bogs surrounded by ditches. The results showed that a large water loss was due to outflow especially during snowmelt season, and there were more evapotranspiration in the Kamibibai bog, which has drier conditions. These studies provided the estimates that there was no contribution to the growth of bog vegetation by snowmelt in present, while snowmelt made an important contribution before ditch construction.
