TIMBER STANDS ON DRAINED PEATLANDS AS RAW MATERIAL FOR THE SAWMILL INDUSTRY

摘要

The aim of the project was to clarify the most important external and internal quality properties of Norway spruce and Scots pine timber trees growing on drained peatlands. A special attention was paid to the quality of sawn timber. Especially, spruce sawn timber turned out to be better than supposed beforehand. Based on the results, it may be utilized in the same end-use areas as spruce sawn timber in general, i.e. mainly in construction. The quality of sawn timber from pine butt logs was very good. In the upper parts of stems, the quality was clearly poorer. Sawn timber from pine butt logs may be utilized in joinery and that from middle and top logs for construction purposes.
