POST INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT OF A PEATLAND SITE IN COUNTY MAYO, WEST OF IRELAND: INTEGRATING PEATLAND REHABILITATION AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION AFTER-USES

In compliance with Integrated Pollution Control Licensing, Bord na Mona must submit a rehabilitation plan to the Environmental Protection Agency for industrially developed peatlands. The aim of rehabilitation is the development of sustainable after-uses. This paper outlines the development of a rehabilitation plan for the Oweninny Works in NW Mayo and describes how an extensive wind farm was incorporated into the plan. It highlights the wise after-use of industrial peatlands and illustrates the integration of the green energy potential of post-industrial bog with the re-instatement of replacement peatland habitats.
