The objective of this research was to examine the impact of a magneticrnion exchange resin (MIEX) on subsequent ozonation of drinking water.rnA highly colored raw water with a high ozone demand and highrnbromide ion concentration was treated with the MIEX resin using jarrntest procedures to select the optimal resin dosage based upon thernremoval of ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing substances, TOC, color, andrnbromide. The water was then ozonated in a semi-batch reactor and thernformation of bromate and the removal of UV-absorbance and colorrnwere evaluated as a function of ozone dosage and contact time. Thernresults were compared to those obtained by ozonating the water withoutrnMIEX-pretreatment. The results show that pretreatment of the waterrnwith the MIEX resin substantially removes UV-absorbing substancesrnand color and, to some extent, bromide. The ozone demand of thernwater was reduced substantially and bromate formation was lowered asrna result of the resin pretreatment.
