Ozonation or advanced oxidation treatment of wastewater contaminatedrnwith acrylonitrile (AN) generates hydrogen cyanide, a toxic andrnundesirable product. Hydrogen cyanide is one of the major byproductsrnwhen remediation is carried out at neutral or acidic pH. This studyrnillustrates the mechanism of oxidation of AN by ozone and by hydroxylrnradicals in dilute aqueous solution. The oxidation of AN by molecularrnozone generates formaldehyde, formic acid, hydrogen cyanide, andrnhydrogen peroxide as the major intermediate products. In addition tornthe same products, oxidation by hydroxyl radicals also generatesrnglycolic, glyoxylic, and oxalic acids. The byproducts (hydrogenrncyanide, formaldehyde, formic, glycolic, and oxalic acid) werernquantified and reaction mechanisms that account for the observedrnintermediates are presented.
