Reports by different scientific groups indicated some concern aboutrntraces of drugs that could make it all the way into tap water. Studiesrnindicated that activated carbon and ozone, which are used in Canada,rnUS and Europe in drinking-water plants, generally remove any traces ofrndrugs.rnThe Windsor Utilities Commission, Windsor, Ontario, Canada isrninterested in the effectiveness of ozone in degrading environmentalrncompounds, such as trace organic compounds, mainly pesticides andrnpharmaceuticals. The Commission has started a project to identify thernpresence of any possible traces of drugs in our water supply.rnThe preliminary analysis indicated that trace levels of clofibric acid andrnnaproxen, 103 ng/L and 63.0 ng/L, respectively, were detected in thernincoming raw water. Since these were only single grab samples,rnsample volumes may have been too low to detect the other compoundsrnof interest.
