In nonwovens, fiber crimp behavior is important for processing performance andrnproduct quality. The primary objective of this study was to quantify the mechanicalrnfiber behavior during crimp removal. Single fiber tensile tests in the crimp removalrnregion have been performed on various fibers with the Textechno FAVIMAT and havernalso been monitored photographically. Based on empirical evidence, a basicrnunderstanding of the physical crimp removal mechanism was obtained.rnA mechanical model accounting for the nonlinear load-deflection behavior during crimprnremoval was developed. With help of this model, characteristic parameters for the shapernof the load-extension curve could be extracted and were interpreted in terms of processrnsettings during crimp production and the processing history of the fiber duringrnnonwoven production.
