Application of PhabrOmeter as a New Objective Fabric Hand Instrument

A new instrument named PhabrOmeter is employed to evaluate the feel of common laundry fabrics based on the principle of fabric extraction. The fabrics are also assessed with traditional tactile sensory approaches by expert panels. The extraction curves of the fabrics tested using the PhabrOmeter can be examined and some characteristic features are obtained readily on command. The results are also compared against the fabric properties measured with the Kawabata KES system. With the results acquired, the feasibility and advantages using the PhabrOmeter as a fast and reliable instrument for fabric hand evaluation are primarily demonstrated. PhabrOmeter can not replace but can be used as a complementary tool to existing instrumental methods and traditional sensory panels.
