In mechanical pulping, most of the money is spent on specific surface area creation. All of the surface area created is important, contributing to the optical and strength properties of paper. This total created surface area can be divided into two categories: surface area that adds to the unbonded area (optical properties), and surface area that adds to the bonded area (strength properties) of mechanical papers. The optimum is to maximize both of these. This paper demonstrates how this can be achieved when wood fiber quality is considered as a process parameter in PGW mills using Populus species in production.
