The accelerated harvesting of pine stands damaged by the Mountain Pine Beetle. Dendroctonus ponderosae is taking place on a large scale throughout north central British Columbia. A bluestain fungus. Ophiostoma sp. is carried into host trees by the beetle, affecting a major portion of the sapwood. Quesnel River Pulp is a market pulp mill that utilizes fibre from local sawmill residual chips. A significant component of the chip mix is lodgepole pine. Pinus contorta from beetle killed stands. A lab scale study was conducted to investigate the effects of bluestain chips on refining energy, bleach consumption, and final pulp quality. This paper presents the methodology and findings of the study that determined these chips to be highly appropriate for the thermomechanical (TMP) and bleached chemithermomechanical (BCTMP) processes.
