Developments for Higher Reliability: Basic platform for the introduction of the new Sulzer RTA48T and RTA58T two-stroke diesel engines for bulkers and tankers

The paper describes the state-of-the-art in modern two-stroke diesel engines of the Sulzer RTA series to meet today's clear demands for higher reliability and economy and to serve as a basis for new engine models. The engineering work involved in improving the combustion chamber components in strength and durability is used as an example of the level of technology achieved. In the same respect, some indication is also given of how market factors and the development priorities were applied in the development of the new RTA48T and RTA58T engines.
