Keeping reciprocating machinery operating efficiently has been a challenge for the operating engineer since reciprocating machinery was invented. This is particularly true of power producing units and compressors. This paper will address more the concerns of the diesel engine. Modern micro-computer technology has allowed development of portable equipment which can provide real time analysis in a non-invasive manner. This paper will describe the hardware, analysis techniques, software and cost benefits which this technology can provide. The paper will also provide some examples using the analysis techniques which enable early correction of problems and for predictive maintenance planning, thus avoiding more serious problems in the future. Implications of maintenance planning are also discussed.
