The oil absorbency by the kenaf core powders above 0.15 mm was higher than that by commercial oil sorbents, kenaf bast powders, and the wood powders. The kenaf core powders carbonized at 200 - 800℃ had about 2.4 - 3.8 times oil absorbency capacity compared to kenaf core powders above 0.15 mm, although the yields of the kenaf core powders carbonized at 200℃ - 1000℃ were about 90% - 20%. The oil absorbency by the kenaf core powders carbonized with a water activator was higher than that by the kenaf core powders carbonized without an activator, although the yield of both is nearly the same. Therefore, the efficient oil sorbents prepared from kenaf in this study were the kenaf core powders above 0.15 mm, carbonized at 300-400℃ with a water activator. The changes in the specific surface area and the functional groups of carbonized kenaf core powders, derived from the carbonization, were assumed to have contributed to the oil absorbency.
