Aiming at development of a new method of alumina reduction that can be applied to aluminum energy cycle, experiments of alumina reduction using CW laser ablation were conducted with a kW-class CW CO2 laser. Emission spectra from the ablation plume were measured; Al I line spectra were detected. Results show that alumina reduction succeeded without reducing stores. The temperature varied with ambient pressure and laser intensity: 3,100-3,850 K. The maximum molar reduction percentage and energy conversion efficiency was 13% and 0.73%. To apply alumina reduction by laser ablation Further improvement of these will be achieved by increasing laser intensity.
