Pattern languages were first developed in the 1970s as a way to tie together the wide range of design elements found in the field of civil architecture. In the early 1990's pattern languages began to appear in the field of sftware development. Patterns, pattern languages and pattern maps are an effective means of capturing large, complex boides of knowledge. It is proposed that a Systems Engineering Pattern language be developed for the purpose of capturing the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge.
