In this paper, we propose a new location update strategy that is based on the strongly connected component concept in graph theory. The key idea is to take the user mobility pattern into account to reduce the cost of the location update. At first, the new scheme finds strongly connected components in a directed graph which consists of cells and the relationship between cells based on the movement history of each MT. Next, the strongly connected components become the LA (Location Area) of the MT. There is a strong probability that the MT which resides at a strongly connected component moves only within it. Therefore, the location update cost can be reduced by eliminating the location update within the same strongly connected component. The analysis of performance using simulation shows that our new scheme outperforms other dynamic schemes in cost regardless of CMR (call to mobility ratio).
