A primary goal for UDDI is to provide a standard mechanism for efficient and accurate service discovery. UDDI uses taxonomies to categorize data. The ability to browse taxonomies is essential to achieve this goal but is currently not standardized within UDDI. This paper introduces a France Telecom R&D project called "MaJIU" (MEDOR and JORM Integrated with UDDI), which aims to build a generic taxonomy browsing capability for UDDI Version 2.0 registry. A clearly defined objective of MaJIU is to use open source technologies in order to eventually be contributed back to the open source community. MEDOR, a query optimization engine, and JORM, a persistence framework, are distributed middleware components developed by the ObjectWeb Consortium where France Telecom R&D is a founding member. We illustrate our approach with a profile taxonomy use case. This paper also illustrates the technical feasibility of external taxonomy browsing in UDDI.
