The present study assesses groundwater recharge and 'groundwater utilization potential' for irrigation in Teesta Barrage Project in Bangladesh based on the hydrogeological information and the groundwater level and abstraction data for a period of seven years (1994-2000). The results show that farmers' inclination towards cultivating HYV Boro rice during the dry season may not be sustained in larger part of the study area if the currently preferred mode of abstraction is continued. However, there exists a possibility of additional groundwater use up to 125 mm in the dry season varying over the study area with an overall average of 40mm if the economically attractive pumping technology of 'deep-set shallow tube well' is adopted by the farmers. A structured approach, based on zoning of groundwater use potential, is recommended for development.
