The paper shows the results of a work aimed at developing a lightweight mortar with self-compacting properties in the fresh state and with low permeability after hardening. The use of expanded clay aggregates reduced the density of the mortar to about 1600kg/m~3, while the addition of a high content of pulverized coal fly ash provided the high content of fines required for self-compactability and allowed the development of a dense and impermeable cement paste. Consequently the repair material also showed a high resistance to penetration of chlorides and sulphates.
