This paper discusses the results from previous experimental observations of hot crack susceptibility in austenitic solidifying alloys in Fe-Ni and Fe-Cu systems. Earlier experiments where liquid copper penetrates into iron will also be discussed in relation to investigations of penetration during strain. The results are analysed in terms of a new theory concerning vacancy formation and condensation as the dominating mechanism for hot crack formation during solidification.
