Around 27,700 households were chosen for the first phase of the kerbside collection scheme, based on three operational centres throughout the case study area in South Wales, UK. Three different methods of storing recyclables were chosen. One area trialled putting out recyclables in a box, another area used clear bags, both these storage receptacles were provided 'free of charge' by the council. The third area asked residents to re-use super market carrier bags to store their recyclables. A recyclable waste analysis was performed on the materials diverted by each of the three methods together with continual monitoring of each of the trial areas performance. After 10 months all areas were converted to the clear bag storage system and another recyclable waste analysis was conducted. This paper looks at whether the type of storage receptacle affects the scheme performance in terms of participation and material recovery. The difference before and after the trial receptacles changed-over to clear bags will be examined.
