A sudden and catastrophic slide involving approximately 1.5 million metric tonnes of solid waste took place on September 27,1997 in the Zone II area of the Dona Juana Landfill. Results from a forensic investigation carried out by the authors to assess the causes of failure are presented in this paper. This case history is considered to be significant because it documents a pore-pressure induced stability failure in a solid waste fill and provides field measurements of the critical pore pressures that were found to have induced failure. The study also shows that waste slope behavior can be modeled using basic soil mechanics principles and effective stress analysis.
