Architecture Pattern Organization

The successful adoption of design patterns in the software industry has had an important follow up by an effort towards a pattern based approach to architecture. Proponents of the pattern oriented approach to architecture define an architecture patterns to be an abstraction higher than design patterns which focus on solving subsystem and component realization, organization and interaction problems. Architecture by definition is not only functional subsystem decomposition; it includes domain definition, software organization, deployment as well as infrastructure (hardware and network) definition. Since no single pattern catalog covers all the architecture concerns, architects don't have a frame of reference to understand where each of the patterns fit in the overall architecture definition lifecycle. In this paper we propose a comprehensive architecture pattern organization scheme that extends the Pattern Oriented System Architecture pattern categories to encompass end to end architecture concerns.
