The study herein discusses an example of the interpretation with emphasis on the application in characterization of material stratification and slide mechanism of slopes, based on results of inclinometer data from a long-term ground-monitoring program. The monitoring area, called Woo-wan-chai, covers about 50 hectares in plan and locates between mileages 28K+900 and 31K+500 along the Province Road 18 in Chiai County, Taiwan. With careful examinations on variations in the direction and magnitude of the recorded ground deformations, the results appeared to provide a better interpretation on the stratification of material layers, the location of slip surfaces, and the development of slope movements. The study found contributing factors for movements of slopes in this area appeared to be due to: (ⅰ) rainfall infiltration - which tended to increase the driving weight of sliding mass; (ⅱ) surface run-off - which eroded the slope toe; and (ⅲ) ground-water rise - which decreased the effective stress and softened the materials along the slip surface.
