Under laboratory conditions, A SHPB is modified to establish a dynamic hardness testing system using single stress pulse technology, signal acquisition technology and pulse control technology. Dynamic hardness of AD95(armored ceramic materials), Alloy(LY12), brass, steel 45,40Cr, α-Si3N4/Al composite and other materials are tested and analyzed using the dynamic hardness testing system. It is found that the values of the dynamic hardness of the tested materials are higher than their corresponding static hardness values. The dynamic hardness of magnesium alloy, compared with its static hardness, has the largest increase of about 36%. The dynamic hardness of α-Si3N4/Al composite materials, compared with its static hardness, has the least increase of about 2%. The results also show that the value of dynamic hardness of pre-stressed composite materials increases with the pre-stress level due to the inhibition of crack growth.
