Fibrowatt is the only renewable energy developer and operator in Britain focussed solely on energy production from Biomass in. the form of agricultural residues. It has three power stations with a total capacity of 65MW, and will soon have a further 88MW under construction. To date Fibrowatt has produced some 2,650,000 MWh of electricity, used 3,700,000 tonnes of biomass as fuel and has 183,000 hours of operating experience. This paper gives an overview of the formation of Fibrowatt as developer, owner and operator of these unusual biomass plants. It explains the technical and commercial background to each project. It explains the technology used and how this has developed, including a review of technology proposed for future projects and of technological options considered but not used to date. The paper concludes by reviewing the role of the developer in a project and the role of engineering in the development process for Fibrowatt's projects.
