The medical use of ionizing radiation started at the beginning of the century. It has always been consideredrnnecessery , as well for diagnostic applications where exposure to the patient is the price to pay in order to obtainrnuseful images, as for therapy where the patient is exposed on purpose, in order to kill malignant cells. It isrnnowadays the major man-made contribution to the population dose . Even with the Developments of substitutivernimaging or treatment techniques, there is still an increasing demand and many organizations are joining theirrnefforts to try to keep the dose to the patient “ as low as reasonably achievable “.This is particularly the case forrnthe International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) which recommended in publication 26 to followrnthree main principles: justification, optimisation and limitation. Limitation , however, does not apply to patientsrnsince the individuals exposed are expected to benefit from this exposure, but justification and optimization arernrelevant.
