We are constantly exposed to those who preach and attempt to sell glib statements such as "Upskill now, this is the decade of Project Management" and "Without Project Management skills you have No Business Future". Many agree that the 21st century workplace will change and reflect a greater understanding and use of Project Management. But what of the reality of mass fast-paced change? Does the project management profession have the right focus for the future? Is all the experience that has been gained by project management practitioners from all those years appropriate for this century, or even worse, redundant? This paper will argue that the way in which organisations and individuals utilise project management will indeed help determine their success in meeting the challenges ahead of managing at the 'speed of change'. A likely scenario involves further integration and harmony of both the traditional and modern modules of project management into business.Among the issues highlighted and discussed will be:1. Traditional project scheduling - what is the priority in the 21st century? 2. The role of non-project staff in a projectised environment 3. How do you achieve synergies between projects and operational work? The challenge for the project manager of the new millennium will be the ability to move seamlessly about an organisation. The ability to integrate information and people, will be as important as the actual deliverable(s) of the individual project(s).
