Optical fiber composite ground wire (OPGW) is a new ground wire, having not only many advantages such large optical fiber message capacity, low loss, wide frequency band, strong electromagnetic interference resistance, but also the, mechanical strength and electric performance necessary for conventional pole ground wire. Incorporating engineering design practice in, the paper describes some key points in both electric and mechanical performances, these points have to be taken in account when OPGW in the line of a urban power network is spanned. Not only some general problems, such as selection, model selection, thermal stability verification of OPGW model are discussed, but also points of view of the author on matching of the overhead ground wire in OPGW engineering design, the structural strength the pole, and comparison between application of power fiber-optic cables of different models are put forward.
