OVERMOLDING RUBBER ON A PM SPROCKET

Powdered metal sprockets are often used as driving members in engine camshaft drive applications. While inverted tooth type chain is known for it's noise attenuation properties, roller chain is as well known for its durability. To improve roller chain noise characteristics, rubber can be added to a roller chain sprocket. However, the sprocket assembly must be designed to resist oil and engine temperatures as well as the rubber must bond to a PM sprocket that has been heat treated and oil quenched. Factors addressed include PM sprocket design, molded rubber design, material selection, and the bond that occurs in the molding process.
