A new approach for the manufacturing of copper-carbon metal matrix composites is based on the coating of the reinforcement with the matrix material by physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods. PVD processes are very versatile because they allow for the deposition of intermediate layers in the nanometer range. By doing this the adhesion between the copper coating and the carbon reinforcement can be tailored. First results on composite materials prepared by hot pressing of PVD-coated carbon fillers are presented. By using a high and low thermal conductive filler for the research, a comparison with model calculations is possible and the importance of the interface is demonstrated. The thermal properties of the composite materials achieved by using the sputter deposition process are discussed. The potential of this deposition method will be analyzed and further applications will be shown.
