Near net shape manufacturing is one of the major advantages of spray forming process. To improve the dimensional precision of a deposit, real time monitoring and on-line controlling of the deposit dimensions in spray forming have been carried out in this study. The deposit images were captured by using a CCD sensing system. An image processing algorithm has been developed to determine the deposit dimensions based on a new edge detection operator, Sobel-Zernike moments operator. It has been shown that the running time of the image processing is short and the average relative error is small, meeting the requirements for the on-line control of deposit dimensions. A fuzzy controller has been established based on intelligent control theory. Fuzzy control rules were identified to design the fuzzy controller. The experiment results showed that the fuzzy controller has satisfactory control performance for characteristic deposit dimensions.
