Sintering aluminium in nitrogen is more effective than in other atmospheres. This suggests that the atmosphere plays an active role in the sintering of aluminium. Here we examine the sintering of aluminium in vacuum, argon, nitrogen and in mixtures of hydrogen with argon and nitrogen. We show that the atmosphere influences the weight gain, the sintered density and the pore size. Nitrogen is more efficacious than vacuum which, in turn, is more effective than argon. A key feature in the use of nitrogen is the formation of aluminium nitride. Hydrogen is extremely prejudicial to sintered density.
