Performance and cost of nonwovens are greatly influenced by the polypropylene grade and processing conditions used. Now, a novel, peroxide-free, additive provides the controlled degradation of a spunbond grade polypropylene during meltblown spinning, improving properties of the resulting nonwoven fabric. This new class of free-radical generators circumvents drawbacks associated in the use of peroxides. The resulting meltblown fabrics show tremendous improvements of barrier and mechanical properties compared to state-of-the-art resins. The use of the additive significantly increases the flexibility in the selection of raw materials; in particular, recycled spunbond production scrap can be converted into high value-added meltblown grade resin.
