This paper emphasizes effects of wetted surface area and importance of customized computer rheology software. Often wetted surface area is ignored or overlooked when designing the co-extrusion package and attention is only paid to the spiral design of a die. Wetted surface area plays an important role in determining the total pressure drop and residence time in a system, which effects final output and versatility. Since industry relies on simulations of CAE technology, it is important to have accurate CAE results for meeting application requirements. However, some relatively new and complex processes such as spiral design and internal details of the stackable die system still need to be investigated in order to gain a better understanding of the process and its optimization.
