Many film extruders and film markets are reaping the property benefits offered by advanced Ziegler-Natta and high strength linear polyethylenes. These families of polymers feature high strength film properties that are a must in many of today's demanding packaging applications. To achieve the full benefit from these polymers, it is necessary to determine optimum extrusion conditions. This paper explores the effect of blow-up ratio, die gap, output rate and other key extrusion parameters on final film properties. Commercially available octene and hexene copolymers were extruded on a coextrusion line to better understand these effects and develop optimum conditions. Physical properties of the films produced were statistically analyzed and compared to determine processing optimums.
