Social Impact of Informatization and National Policies To Close the Digital Divide - Case Study of the Republic of Korea

Now, more than ever, unequal adoption of technology excludes many from reaping fruits of economy. Korea is not an exception. In spite of rapid growth of internet usage, there are still marginalized groups which have difficulty in using internet. Korean government has taken steps toward solving the digital divide. They are expanding infrastructure for telecommunications services, increasing access to telecommunications services, narrowing the global digital divide, the provision of IT learning opportunities, and developing contents for the elderly and people with disabilities as well as measurement of digital divide. Also, on-line education is one of the efficient ways to promote human resources needed to construct information society. Under these circumstances, KADO is providing many opportunities under the support of MIC in order to promote citizens' IT usage ability and their information life and to bridge the digital divide.
