Accessibility of Values-Based Information: The Possibility of Embedded Democracy

This paper investigates the design, governance and implications of a handheld database device that provides consumers with quick and easy access to values-based information. The device enables consumers to easily identify products that are produced by firms that operate in ways that are consonant with their values. Metrics will reflect diverse value sets. Once enough consumers use the device and achieve critical mass, firms will have fiscal incentive to alter their operating principles in response to value-based demand patterns. Firm accountability will extend beyond the boardroom. Consumers will feel empowered by this new channel for civic self-expression outside of the voting cycle.
