This paper begins with a review of centrifuge modeling of soil improvement methods, in particular vertical drain method, sand compaction piles method and deep mixing method, and discusses how the present modeling techniques are closed to reality. The paper then focuses on two recent attempts related to the modeling of sand compaction piles method carried out at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. One is the vertical and lateral behavior of a single pile installed in improved ground by sand compaction piles with various replacement area ratios. From which the degree of improvement of pile characteristies is quantitatively evaluated. The other is the behavior of a piled cellular quay wall constructed in improved ground by sand compaction piles, subjected to backfill loading.
