With the support of the European Commission, twelve geotechnical centrifuge groups have combined their efforts from 1996 to 2001 to investigate the possibilities and limits of centrifuge modelling in the domain of pollutant migration in soils. Within the NECER network (Network of European Centrifuges for Environmental Geotechnics Research), four working groups have been created to coordinate the research works in the following topics: development of new sensors and new techniques for pollutant monitoring, theoretical and experimental studies of the capillary phenomena, physical modelling of NAPLs transport and training.
