By offloading storage space allocation management to intelligent storage device from server's file systems, more computational power of servers is made available for incoming requests, thus improve the system performance. The Object Based Disk (OBD), as one kind of such intelligent devices, has more intelligence than traditional block-based storage devices. In this paper, we first introduce Linux-based OBD devices, then discuss OBD-based SAN architecture and its implementation. We also address the issues of mapping Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) onto OBD-based SAN architecture. Performance results are given for comparison between two different networking deployments: VIA and TCP.
