Limits of Conventional Drawing Technology

The sheetmetal forming industry is faced with an increasing pressure on costs. As conventional manufacturing methods quickly reach their limits, alternative manufacturing methods and its related equipment are gaining importance. The objectives pursued by these new manufacturing technologies are among others an increase of the formability (e.g. integrated design), the processing of new thin sheet materials /3/, and methods for an economical production of small lots. Whether these new approaches will be successful or not, is mainly dependent on the competitive advantage they offer the user in terms of profitability. In the following the process limits of conventional drawing technology are explained with special attention on new solutions regarding process and facility technology.
