Modelling, Design and Testing of an MSM Actuator

Magnetic Shape Memory (MSM) actuators are, from an applications point of view, still in their early infancy. Not only is the active material itself still an active focus of scientific development, there are also no generally accepted guidelines for designing such actuators, neither in terms of methods and tools, nor in terms of underlying models. The present manuscript describes the design of a compact MSM actuator, starting from the concept phase, via definition of a viable modelling approach, to building and testing a prototype.
