The giant magnetostrictive materials (GMM) such as TbFe_2, SmFe_2 and Terfenol-D have been widely studied because of high magnetostrictions at room temperature. An improvement of the magnetostrictive properties of GMM may induce wider application fields of electric-mechanical energy conversion. In this study, magnetic properties of TbFe_2 alloys solidified under microgravity (μG) conditions obtained by a drop tube system were investigated. The columnar structure was found oriented < 111 > of the intermetallics TbFe_2 phase which exhibits giant magnetostrictions over 1000 ppm.
