A new, electro-mechanical actuation system for changing gear in a high-performance sequential gearbox is presented. Gear ratios are selected using a custom designed variable reluctance actuator that is integrated into the gearbox. The gear change mechanism is driven using a high efficiency MOSFET H-bridge converter operated from a 12V battery and capable of supplying a peak current of 200A. The system is controlled using a fuzzy logic control algorithm implemented using a digital signal processor. A coupled field-circuit mathematical model of the actuator has been developed to aid controller design. During testing, gear changes with a duration of less than 10ms have been demonstrated.
