Architectural foundations of hypermedia-enabled expert systems

The purpose of this research is to develop a standardized set of techniques and an architectured blueprint for the construction of hypermedia-enabled expert systems. We propose an architecture termed HYPES for the development of media-rich expert systems. We then develop a knowledge-based taxonomy of various media types and a set of KNOWME tools which enable these objects to directly manipulate knowledge in native or near-native formats. Following the design guidelines of HYPES, we propose a prototype expert system that provides a rich variety of media types and KNOWME methods.
